1. Introduction

These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your use of FireThings, a mobile and web application for fire alarm engineers ("the App", "Service", "FireThings", "we", "us", "our").

By creating an account or using FireThings, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use the App.

FireThings is operated by George Christopher Scott, trading as FireThings, a sole trader registered in England and Wales.

FireThings is a productivity application designed for fire alarm engineers. The Service includes:

5. Subscriptions and Payment

5.1 Subscription Plans

FireThings offers three subscription tiers:

Feature availability depends on your subscription tier. Some features also require company membership and appropriate permissions assigned by your company admin.

5.2 Billing

Paid subscriptions are billed through the platform where you subscribed:

Solo subscriptions are available on all platforms. Team subscriptions are available via the web portal only.

5.3 Automatic Renewal

Subscriptions automatically renew unless you cancel before the end of the current billing period. For Apple App Store and Google Play purchases, you must cancel at least 24 hours before the renewal date. You can manage and cancel your subscription through:

Cancelling your subscription retains your access until the end of the current paid period. After that, your account reverts to the Free tier.

5.4 Team Subscription Seat Management

Team subscriptions are billed per seat. The company admin manages seat count through the Stripe Customer Portal. Adding seats is prorated for the current billing period. Removing seats takes effect at the next billing period.

5.5 Price Changes

We may change subscription prices. Price changes take effect at the start of your next billing period. We will provide at least 30 days' notice of price increases. Existing subscribers may be grandfathered at their current rate at our discretion.

5.6 Refunds

5.7 Payment Failure and Grace Period

If a subscription payment fails, we provide a 14-day grace period during which your subscription features remain active. If payment is not resolved within 14 days, your account is downgraded to the Free tier.

5.8 Usage Limits

Free tier accounts are subject to monthly usage limits on PDF generation and record creation. Usage counters reset at the start of each calendar month. Current limits are displayed in your Subscription settings.

6. Your Data

6.1 Ownership

You retain full ownership of all data you enter into FireThings, including jobsheets, invoices, quotes, customer and site information, asset records, custom templates, uploaded images, floor plans, wiring diagrams, PDF branding configuration, and BS 5839 compliance records. We do not claim any ownership or intellectual property rights over your data.

6.2 Data Use

We process your data solely to provide the Service. We do not sell your data or use it for advertising. See our Privacy Policy for full details.

6.3 Export and Deletion

You may export your data as PDF documents at any time, delete individual records, or delete your entire account and all associated data from Settings. Account deletion is permanent and cannot be undone. Deletion includes:

If you are a member of a company, shared company data (sites, customers, dispatched jobs, and assets) is NOT deleted when you delete your account — it remains accessible to other company members.

6.4 Data Backup

While we maintain cloud backups of your data, you are responsible for maintaining your own copies of important documents. We recommend saving generated PDFs to your own storage.

7. Intellectual Property

FireThings, including the App, website, logo, design, and all code, is owned by us and protected by copyright, trademark, and other intellectual property laws. You are granted a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable licence to use the App while you have a valid account.

If you provide feedback, suggestions, or ideas about FireThings, you grant us a perpetual, royalty-free licence to use that feedback to improve the Service.

8. BS 5839 Reference Data and Calculators — IMPORTANT DISCLAIMER

8.1 Reference Data

FireThings includes tools that reference BS 5839-1:2025 and other fire safety standards. This reference data is provided as a convenience to assist qualified fire alarm engineers.

This reference data is NOT a substitute for reading, understanding, and applying the full standards. The standards are complex, subject to interpretation, and may be updated. Our summaries may be incomplete or contain errors.

8.2 Calculators

FireThings includes calculators for detector spacing, battery load testing, and DIP switch addressing. These calculators are based on our interpretation of the relevant standards. Calculations may contain errors and are provided for guidance only.

8.3 Your Responsibility

YOU ARE SOLELY RESPONSIBLE for verifying that any calculations or recommendations are appropriate for your specific installation, applying your professional judgement to all fire safety decisions, ensuring compliance with all applicable standards and regulations, and the accuracy of all documents you create.

If you are not a qualified fire alarm engineer, do not use this App to make decisions about fire safety systems.

8.4 BS 5839-1:2025 Compliance Inspection Reports

8.5 No Professional Advice

Nothing in FireThings constitutes professional engineering advice, legal advice, or certification of any kind. The App is a productivity tool, not a compliance guarantee.

9. Limitation of Liability

FireThings is provided "as is" and "as available" without warranties of any kind. To the maximum extent permitted by law, we shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or any damages exceeding the amount you paid us in the 12 months preceding the claim.

You acknowledge that fire alarm systems are safety-critical, that errors in installation, maintenance, or testing can have serious consequences, and that you accept full responsibility for your professional work.

10. Indemnification

You agree to indemnify, defend, and hold harmless FireThings from any claims, damages, losses, or expenses arising from your use of the App, your violation of these Terms, or any claim that your use of the App caused harm to a third party.

11. Termination

You may stop using FireThings and delete your account at any time from Settings. We may suspend or terminate your account if you violate these Terms, engage in fraudulent or illegal activity, your account has been inactive for more than 24 months, or we discontinue the Service (with reasonable notice).

Upon termination, your right to use the App ceases immediately, you remain responsible for any outstanding charges, and your data will be deleted in accordance with our Privacy Policy.

12. Dispatch and Team Features

If you join or create a company in FireThings, company data is shared with other company members according to their roles and permissions.

Company admins control access through a granular permission system (40 individual permissions across 13 categories). Permissions can be customised per team member and may be changed at any time by an admin. Admins have full access, dispatchers can create and assign jobs, and engineers can view and complete assigned jobs.

The web portal (app.firethings.co.uk) provides a desktop interface for dispatchers and admins. Access requires the "Web Portal Access" permission granted by a company admin.

The dispatch system sends real-time push notifications to engineers when jobs are assigned, rescheduled, or require attention. Dispatchers receive notifications when job statuses change. You can manage notification preferences in your device settings.

If you leave a company, you lose access to company data. Your personal data (jobsheets, invoices created outside dispatch) remains yours.

13. Third-Party Services

FireThings uses the following third-party services:

Your use of these services is subject to their respective terms and privacy policies.

14. Changes to Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. We will notify you of material changes by email, in-app notification, or posting on our website. Your continued use of FireThings after changes take effect constitutes acceptance of the new Terms.

15. Governing Law

These Terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales. Any disputes shall be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of England and Wales. Before filing any claim, you agree to contact us first to attempt to resolve the dispute informally.

16. General Provisions

These Terms, together with our Privacy Policy, constitute the entire agreement between you and FireThings. If any provision is found to be unenforceable, the remaining provisions remain in effect. Our failure to enforce any provision does not constitute a waiver. You may not assign your rights under these Terms without our consent.

17. Contact

If you have questions about these Terms, contact us at support@firethings.co.uk.
