DIP switch address calculator

Flip the switches to read an address, or type an address to see which switches need to be on. Works for any 8-way binary DIP switch.

How DIP switch addressing works

Each switch on an 8-way DIP switch has a binary value. Switch 1 is worth 1, switch 2 is worth 2, then 4, 8, 16, 32, 64 and 128 for switch 8. The address is the total of the switches that are ON, so eight switches give addresses from 0 to 255.

200 = 128 + 64 + 8 → switches 8, 7 and 4 ON

Setting an address by hand

  1. Start with the largest switch value that fits into the address (128 for address 200) and turn that switch on.
  2. Take it away: 200 − 128 = 72. Repeat with what's left: 72 − 64 = 8, then 8 − 8 = 0.
  3. When you reach 0, every other switch stays OFF.

Reading the binary

The binary number is written with switch 8 first, so address 200 reads 1100 1000: a 1 for every switch that is ON.
